So far the BoSox uhave added a mayor star in Crawford. I alwys thouht he would be awesome in Yankee Stadium, but the Yanks would have to move someone. Might be too costly, also. The pursui of Cliff Lee continues. Last offer was in the range of 7 years and CC money. (160 mil or so?)

I'm not crazy about that deal. Guy is 34 or so. Outside of cheaters like Clemans, how many fireballing 40 year olds do you know?

I'd be more comfortable with 5 for 115, with an option for a 6th. He'd be 40 then.

Rumor mill is in full swing. The New York Post photoshopped a picture of Jeter in a Red Sox uniform.

Hank Steinbrenner released a statement that the Yankees have made the free agents(Jeter, Mo, and Pettitte) very, very rich and should just sign for what the Yankees offer.

Did you see Kevin Youkilis charge the mound because he got hit? He threw his helmet at the pitcher, girlie style, and then got thrown to the ground.
This is a pitcher who two years ago was pitching high school ball. Not exactly a guy who has perfect control.

Youkilis is a punk. Jeter and A-Rod get hit in the double digits each year, and when was the last time they charged the mound? It's because they aren't punks like Youk.

Tampa Bay was the latest team to get in the way of the steamroller that is the Bronx Bombers. The power was supplied by Damon, Cano, and Swisher (2) and Burnett pitched well to gain his 10th win. (1 run through 7 innings.)

The Yanks maintained their lead over the Sox .

Tonight's contest against the Rays is on local TV so I can catch part of it.

The Fish were no match for the Bombers who actually got a few hits today and put up some runs. Pettitte pitched well, and we came away with a 5-1 win.

It doesn't make up for the pitiful showing against the Nats, but at least we put one on the win side of the ledger.

AJ will start tomorrow night as we try to make it 2 in a row, and CC gets the nod on Sunday.

Looking around the league, Matsuzaka got lit up again. Look for the Sahx to shut him down. And not let him ever pitch in the World Classic or whatever they called that nonsense before the season started.

I didn't watch the game, so I can only go by what I read, but Wang seemed to struggle as he didn't make it out of the 5th inning.
He was "on" early, but seemed to tire. When interviewed afterwards, Wang was happy with his progress. He feels he is near where he was a few years ago.
I'm happy if he's happy.

Joba to the bullpen?

I just was listening to Francesa, and he said by August 1st, Joba will be in the 'pen.

This has been on the mind of many Yankee fans for quite a while as Joba has been only ok as a starter. He has lost about 5 MPH in velocity, which Girardi claims was expected, but the difference between mid and high 90's is pretty significant in the big leagues.

Way back in the 70's when the Ryan Express was bringing it at over 100 MPH, I had some great seats at a game against the Angels. I was on the first base side and pretty close. It seemed like he wound up, and the catcher was throwing the ball back to him.

Yeah, Ryan threw some heat. If I recall, Nolan was consistently hitting between 100 and 105. As much as I like Joba and admire his talent, he has never approached those numbers. And, if the extra 5 MPH is really true, then would Ryan have been able to throw 110 or so as a reliever?

It just sounds like PR, and maybe Joba, as good as he can be, is best suited for the 'pen. He has shown flashes of brilliance as a starter, but he has also been average.

The Yankee bats were booming as they pounded Texas pitching again, winning 9-2. But the good news is that Burnett looked good, notching his first win since mid- April, but the even better news is Wang looked like he is back. The box score showed 2 innings pitched, with 2 strikeouts and no hits, but the real story is that his turbo sinker, or whatever it's called, was blazing at 90+ MPH with a lot of movement.
Before he went down in April, he wasn't hitting those numbers. I'm not sure of the immediate plans for Wang, but he will be in the rotation soon enough.

If the rains hold off, Burnett takes the hill and tries to get the team back on the winning track. Maybe it's me, but it seems like whenever there is a significant rain delay, the Yankees lose. Do they keep stats on this? It sure seems like they lose whenever there is a long delay.

Hopefully, the game will start at 8 EST tonight, as scheduled.

Posada has been making progress in his rehab, and may be joining the team shortly. Francisco Cervelli is getting a shot due to all the injuries, and he has been coming through. He has been displaying great confidence, to go along with a strong throwing arm. While his average in the minors last year wasn't great, he believes that he can hit major league pitching. That would be a bonus as Yankee fans have become spoiled with great hitting catchers. Dickey, Berra, Munson, Howard, and Posada were All-Stars who donned the tools for the Bombers. Could Cervelli be the next in that illustrous line?

Phil Hughes pitched a terrific game, and the Yankees backed him up with 19 hits and 11 runs as they pounded the Ranger 11-1. The lone Ranger run came on a solo homer in the 9th off Aceves.

The Yankee attack was led by A-Rod, who went 5-5 and drove in 4 runs. Every Yankee starter had at least one hit, while Hughes's spread 3 hits and no runs over 8 innings. The 6 strike out performance was one of his best as a Yankee. The next game is Tuesday at 8:05 in Arlington.

After dropping 2 of 3 to the Phils, including yesterday's extra inning battle royale, the pinstripers flew to Texas to take on the Rangers. The Yanks finished the home stand a very respectable 8-2. Phil Hughes will be trying to get the Yankees back on the winning track at a 2:00 start in the Texas heat.
After the let down from yesterday, along with the flight (didn't there used to be off days for travel?) I'm expecting a slow start. Hope I'm wrong.

BTW, CC pitched well yesterday, and did not figure in the decision.

Yankees come back in 9th to beat Phils

Ninth inning heroics as A-Rod smacked a 2 run homer, and Melky then drove in Cano who had singled and stole second as the Yanks beat last year's "Mr Perfect," Brad Lidge. That is another walk off game winner for Melky, and another cream pie.

4 Homers as balls continue to fly out of Yankee Stadium. My favorite part of the game, of course, had to be the horrible announcers. John Mayberry Jr. was just called up, and had a big game. The announcers spent considerable time talking about John Mayberry Sr, and had him in the crowd and on camera several times. Here's the best part--they had the wrong guy.

Rubber game is Sunday at 1:00.

The Phils- Yanks are the game of the week on Fox.

The balls flew out of the park last night, and hopefully today will be a bit less. Pettitte is on the hill, and he can be hit or miss, it seems.

Joba was interviewed, and he said he will make his regular start. Wang pitched in relief last night. Didn't do great, but better than he had been.

Joba got hit by a comebacker in the first, and the 'pen held off the O's and the Yanks rolled to their 9th straight win. Initial reports are that it is a bruise and obviously is day to day. More news will be out tomorrow.

In other injury news, Wang will make one more start in the minors before getting called back to the big club.

Phillies are in town for the Memorial Day weekend as inter league play starts. I wonder how Ryan Howard will like the new Yankee Stadium? Considering that more homers have been hit into the right field stands at the ballpark in the South Bronx than total homers at most other ballparks, it should be an interesting weekend.

AJ Burnett has introduced as new tradition at Yankee Stadium, and it would be great to see it happen another hundred times this year.

As the Yankee who drove in the winning run gets interviewed, AJ comes up and hits him in the face with a cream pie.

Johnny Damon who homered in the bottom of the 10th was the latest "victim."

The third straight come from behind walkoff win, and 5th straight win overall, has thrust the Yanks right in the middle of the race.

And nothing but good news from down on the farm as Wang pitched well at Scranton, going 7 innings and getting mostly ground ball outs (the sinker is working well) and Bruney is on track to be back in a few days, also.

Monday, the Yanks finish up the 4 game series with the Twins as Pettitte takes the mound.

Usually I do a wrapup, but since I've been a slacker lately, thought I'd blog while watching the Twins- Yankees game.
It's currently 3-2 as the Yankees have the lead based on a Teixeira 3 run bomb.

Joba is looking pretty good, although his pitch count is getting up there. It's around 80 in the 5th.

He strikes out a lot of batters, and many, if not most of the other outs are on fly balls.

Yankee batters are going down without taking a lot of pitches. They need to go deeper in the count.

Yankees win using the long ball

Teixeira, Cano, and Damon all belted home runs yesterday to beat the O's and finally win a series taking 2 out of 3 in Baltimore.

For the second start in a row, Joba got roughed up in the first inning, climaxed by Huff's 3 run homer, and then he settled down, shutting out the Birds until turning the ball over to the 'pen in the seventh.

Considering his fired up attitude, one can only presume he is so excited to start that he just loses concentration. It sure isn't his lack of ability, as once he gets over the first inning problem, he is almost unhittable.

Rookie catcher Cervelli continues to impress with his enthusiasm and his ablity. He may become part of the long line of great Yankee catchers. It's funny how some teams have so many outstanding players at one position, and the Yankees certainly have a long line of catchers who were All-Stars, and some who were Hall of Famers.

Bill Dickey and Yogi (does he even need a last name?) both shared number 8, and are enshrined at Cooperstown. Elston Howard, Thurman Munson (my favorite Yankee ever,) and Jorge Posada were all perennial All Stars. Will Cervelli be next? He seems to have the zest for playing. Only time will tell.

Today is a travel day, and a series against Toronto starts on Tuesday.

A-Rod is back!!! Yanks win

The first pitch A Rod saw in the first inning in Baltimore promptly got deposited in the stands for a 3 run home run.
That is something that has been missing from the Yanks offense.

And CC Sabathia made it stand up as he pitched a complete game shutout, scattering 4 hits and striking out 8. CC finished strong, striking out the side in the ninth.

This was just what we needed, with Alex banging the ball, and CC going deep in the game.

Phil Hughes looks to make it 2 in a row tomorrow night.

One bright spot is that the Yankees have struggled, yet have managed to hang around .500, while no one has run away with the division. They are only about 5 games out, which they can make up in a good week or so.

Ok, it wasn't steroids, but it was a drug used for women. It is reported that sometimes it is used by someone who took seroids as they come off 'roids.

Ok, Manny is the only Sox player I didn't hate, so I'm kind of a fan and want to give hime every benefit of the doubt.

But it doesn't look good.

As a Yankees fan, I'm pretty happy that it isn't about A-Rod for once.

Yanks play tonight at 7, weather permitting. Yeah, it's raining again. But the Yankee bats have been quiet. Last night, Teixeira got one key hit. Big deal. In the 10th, with one out and Damon on 3rd, he hit a weak popup. He needs to step up and earn some of that big money.

This team is having a lot of trouble scoring. The 3,4, and 5 spot contributed a grand total of 2 singles yesterday.

A-Rod is due back possibly as early as Friday, and it is none too soon. To put up 3 runs and expect to win--that is not realistic.

Joba pitched ok, with 12 strikeouts in 5.2. But the 3 run HR to Jason Bay more than cancelled out what would have been a good game.

The Rays come in tonight, and the Yankees need to put a few runs on the board. AJ Burnett takes the hill to try to turn things around.

Yankee bats go quiet

30 year old rookie Matt Palmer spread a few hits around, and the Halos eventually got to CC in the 7th inning. The key hit seemed to be a single that dropped just in front of LF Johnny Damon. Making that catch may have shut them down altogether. The Angels just seem to have a way of feeding off each other. While CC's line looks rather meh, with 8 hits and 4 ER in 6.2 innings, it really was much better than that. If Damon (who is nursing several injuries) had gotten to that ball, or if Abaldelajo had gotten out the first batter he faced, things would have looked much differently.
Yeah, I know, "if" is the biggest little word, but we are not talking about a miracle here. The ball to Damon was quite catchable, and a fresh reliever should be able to get the first batter out.

I'm not even going to carp about the 30 year old rookie that the team made look like Walter Johnson, as he scattered 3 hits over nearly 7 innings. The offense went 2 for 11 with RISP.

Sad, very sad.

Yanks rally in 9th to beat Angels again

Andy Pettitte was cruising along, headed to an easy win, when suddenly, the Angels did what they always do to the Yankees, they rallied and scored like crazy. Next thing I knew, it was 9-4.

The Angels would hang on, and then K-Rod would ome on and nail down the win.

But wait, Frankie went to the Mets, leaving a huge gap in the Anglel 'pen. And the Yanks took full advantage, drawing to 9-8 entering the ninth.

And, with no K-Rod, the Angels just couldn't hold on. Yanks loaded the bases with no one out, and things looked dire for the Angels.

Jorge Posada walked up to the plate and with the infield drawn in, I was a bit nervous. Just get under it, Jorge. Hit it deep. A tie would make me happy, I didn't want a double play cutting down the runner at the plate or something equally awful.

Instead, Jorge came through with a solid single to left center, and 2 runs scored for a walk off base hit and Albaladejo picked up the win with an inning of shutout relief.

Today at 1:05, Sabathia looks to keep the ball rolling as the Yanks go for their 5th straight win and to take their first series from the Angels since Nixon was President.
(It really hasn'tbeen that long, but it's been a while)

The Angels usually give the Yankees fits, but tonight the Bombers handled them pretty easily. Burnett started and threw 7 decent, but not great innings, giving way to Coke in the 8th. Coke picked up his first win, and Rivera got save #6 with a well pitched 9th.
Final score, 7-4.

The offense showed signs of life as every starter got at least 1 hit.

Next game is Friday at 7

Yankees take second from Tigers

Yankees had one big inning, and it was enough to beat the Tigers last night 8-6 as Joba picked up his first win of the year. The game was only close as the Tigers picked up 5 runs in the bottom of the ninth. Swisher belted 2 dingers for the Bombers.

It makes me worry that while the Yanks have put up a few runs in the last 2 games, they were shut out in 15 of the last 18 innings. I enjoy a big inning as much as the next fan, but they need to score more consistently as those big innings can't be relied on every game.

Maybe it's the injuries, maybe it's just one of those things, but the Yankees aren't scoring. 3 runs total in the last 2 games doesn't cut it in the American League.

Phil Hughes has been called up from Scranton to start tonight's game at Comerica Park. I'm hoping he can go 7 innings to allow the battered 'pen a rest. But it comes back to the offense. It takes a 4 spot every game to be in a game today, it seems. The days of 3-2 and 2-1 pitching duels are rare and vanishing quickly.

A-Rod is still making prgress with his rehab, and while May 15th is still the predicted day of his return, fans hope it will be sooner.

I'm feeling pretty down. To lose all 3 games was painful, to say the least. Sure, the Yankees have injuries, with their 3rd baseman, back up 3rd baseman, left fielder, right fielder, set up man, and one of their starters all are out.

Sadly, the Sox will be in town before the Yankees are at full strength.

Tonight, the Yanks are in Detroit, hoping to right the ship as Sabathia takes the ball. The Tigers currently lead the AL Central.

That one hurt. The Yanks had plenty of chances to put the Sox away, including a bases loaded no out situation in the 7th. Instead, they wound up blowing a 2 run lead with 2 out in the bottom of the ninth.

The Bronx Bombers are going into Fenway riding a nice 3 game winning steak tonight, and Joba will face Lester in game 1. Both teams have identical 9-6 records and the Sox have a 7 game streak.

While it is early to put too much emphasis on this series, it is always nice to beat Boston.

Game time is 7:10 tonight, and tomorrow it's the 4:00 game.

In Yankees news, Wang started against Phillie farmhands in Tampa and struck out 11. Most pitches were down, but he did hang a few that would have been hit hard in the bigs. Cashman is pretty sure Wang will have at least one more minor league start. He is working with Billy Connors (theres a name old Yankee fans should remember.) The DL is still a possibility.

In other news, Phil Hughes is 3-0 at Scranton. A-Rod is progressing well, and is expected back no later than May 15th.

Playing with Joy; Yanks defeat A's

I watched tonight's game with the Mrs. and saw something that made me realize just how special a player Derek Jeter is.

He nearly got picked off at first base, and I told Mrs to watch his face as he gets up. And there it was--a huge smile on his face. This guy loves to play baseball, and it shows in his every action, every day. So many ballplayers have crappy attitudes, they bitch and moan all the time, yet Jeter always plays all out and with a smile.

As to the players who complain, what the hell is wrong with them? It's every kid's dream, to grow up and play (notice no one works baseball) and they are rewarded with huge amounts of money, and opportunities the average person never gets. Just look at mediocre players, after they leave the game, they usually are very successful as doors are opened that Joe Average never knows existed. Stars, of course, are set for life financially by age 35 or sooner. Players should be smiling all the time.

As far as the game, the Yankees looked good tonight. Pettitte was on, and in typical style, he would bend but not break. Andy scattered 9 hits and only allowed 2 runs. Teixeira and Gardner both threw some serious leather to help him out of a few jams. He tossed 7 innings and got the win as the Yanks beat Oakland 5-3. Mo picked up a save, and Bruney got a hold. Damon homered, the A's were kept in the park as the air was rather heavy.

By the way, Pettitte was hitting the low 90's on the radar gun, which made me happy.

And the current situation with Wang is being worked out. He will go to Tampa to try to get his mechanics straightened out. Last night's rainout and Thursday's off day has set it up so he can miss the Sox series. He said he is feeling well, and it's hoped an extended Spring Training game will get him back to his Cy Young contending self.

What a weekend

Saturday, the Yankees stunk up Yankee Stadium with a terrible 22-4 loss as Wang got lit up. The next day, with AJ Burnett on the mound things looked better, but then the Indians mounted a comeback, and with the lead at 3-2 in the 7th inning, they had the bases loaded and one out. Oh no, not again.

Enter Albadelejo.

And this time, Girardi's call to the pen worked, as he shut the door and picked up his first win of the year. Bruney then came on the register a hold, and Mo nailed it down with a perfect ninth.

Posada belted a pinch hit home run, and the Yankees managed to come out with the win.

Homers continued to fly out of the Stadium, as a record was set for the most HR in the 1st games in a new stadium, ever. It seems as if a ball hit to right center just sails out. Talk already is that an engineer may be called in to correct this flaw. Hopefully, not until after A-Rod gets back and gets going. Right center is his favorite place to hit the long ball.

What's wrong with Wang?

The Indians hit him like he's a batting practice pitcher. The ball has no movement on it, and batters seem to just tee off on him.

His ERA is in the 30+ range, and he looks kind of confused. I know he starts slowly, but this is ridiculous. He is looking terrible, and the Stadium crowds are not happy. Phil Hughes is 2-0 in Scranton, and we can only wonder how soon until Wang gets sent down to straighten out.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that he has some lingering injury, or something related to missing most of last year.

One positive note: Nick Swisher is fast becoming a fan favorite. He plays aggressively, and may just become a big star in the Yankee galaxy. He reminds me of Boomer Wells, who was a big favorite of the Bleacher Creatures.

Opening Day Pain

Yesterday, the day started out well enough with some nice opening day ceremonies, and the first at bat, and Jeter had the Babe's bat at home plate. As a joke he picked it up and pretended to get in the batter's box.
The bat was then sent to the dugout, and so many Yankees swung it like little awestruck kids. The bat then was packed up and sent back to Cooperstown.

The game, what can be said when my team gets spanked 10-2?

CC pitched well, but the pitch count got high and he left in the 6th. He held the Indians to 1 run, and the 'pen, for the second time in the last week, fell apart.

Posada hit the first HR in the new Stadium, and damon got the first hit (a single in the first)

Joba is on the mound today.

One nice thing before the game today, on YES, they did a tribute to Bob Shepherd, long time Yankee announcer. His first game was April 17th, 1951, and they had him recreate the lineup announcement.

And, what a lineup!

Loaded with HoF teammates Rizzuto, Mantle, DiMaggio, and Berra. That's something that isn't seen today.

Weekend Update

Yankees lost the final game against the Royals, but there was some good news.

The starting pitching continues to be excellent. CC pitched great on Saturday, mixing a 93-95 MPH fastball with some very effective off speed pitches.
I can't imagine trying to adjust to pitches that varied by as much as 15 or 20 MPH. Talk about killing a batter's timing.
And yesterday, Joba was bringing it at about that same speed range. He is pacing himself. When he relieved, he would hit close to 100 MPH, but as a starter, he has toned it down so he could last a bit longer. Yesterday he went 6 innings, and struck out 5. He held the Royals to 4 hits and only 1 earned run.

With the Master's on this weekend, I missed most of the games, and only caught a few innings of each, but with that over, I'll be back in my seat tonight.

Wang is starting tonight at the Trop against the Rays. Gametime is 7 on YES.

Pettitte Pitches Yankees to win over Royals

Andy Pettitte was strong and looked like the Andy of old as he held the Royals to one run in seven innings while striking out 6.

The offense was led by Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada as the Yanks scored 4 runs. The Yankee 'pen continued to dominate as they turned in another 2 shutout innings with 4 whiffs. Rivera finally got into a game and notched his first save of the year. Bruney picked up a hold.

The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Jorge's 2 rin single and never looked back. For anyone who likes to count, Andy threw 99 pitches.

CC Sabathia will start Saturday at 7:00 as the road trip continues. I'm sure the fairly weak Royals will put CC on track for his first win as a Yankee.

Yankees pound Orioles

AJ Burnett looked good and picked up the win and the Yankee offense was on fire as they beat the Birds 11-2.

Teixeira, Cano, and Swisher homered to finally break through with the first win of the young season.

Pettitte takes the hill on Friday against a rebuilt Royals team. This year's edition in KC is looking pretty strong.

Yankees lose home opener

So, it looks like they aren't going to win the 162 games I had hoped for, nor will CC win every start.

Oh well. It's a long season.

CC was shaky, and had trouble getting his fastball over for strikes. The Yankee offense was good, putting up 5 runs, which should be enough when the ace is on the mound.

Wang is scheduled to start Wednesday at 7:05 against the O's on YES.

Yankees sweep Cubs

In the final tune up for the season, and what many fans hope and believe is a foreshadowing of the 2009 World Series, the Yankees played 2 at the new Yankee Stadium against the Chicago Cubs.
Friday was a good game, but Saturday was my favorite as the Yankees blew the Cubs out. Jeter, Duncan and Teixeira (twice) all homered as they routed the Lou Piniella's squad 10-1.

Yankee pitching was looking good, as Pettitte was in and out of trouble all day, but only allowed one run in 4 plus innings. AJ Burnett also tossed 4 shutout innings for good measure.

Next game is the season opener against the O's on Monday. CC will be on the hill.

Yankees come north after successful spring

The Yankees finished spring training with the best record (22-10-1) in the Grapefruit League.

The biggest surprise of the spring may have been Brett Gardner's emergence as the newest star in the Yankees Galaxy. His strong spring showing earned him the honor of being the 2009 recipient of the James P. Dawson Award.
He also will be the starting CF on Opening Day, edging out Melky Cabrera.

The speedy 25-year-old Gardner batted .390 with 2 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 7RBIs and 5 stolen bases in 24 games.

The power numbers were surprising, as he had a reputation of being a singles hitter.

So, will he be the next great Yankee CF, following in the footsteps of Mantle, Murcer, DiMaggio, and Williams, or just a guy who had a great spring?

Only time will tell.

Girardi announces opening day pitcher

In little more than a week, on April 6th, the Yankees open the season. Today, manager Joe Girardi proclaimed the starting pitcher against the Orioles will be CC Sabathia.

The first game in the Bronx will be April 16th against the Indians.

Ok, who could be surprised by this? The Yankee ace gets the ball to open up the season. The surprise would have been anyone else getting the nod.

The staff is really rounding into shape as Joba and Burnett have pitched all but "lights out" ball this week. If the staff stays healthy, and they should, the Yankees will be playing in October.

Curt Schilling Retires

Yankee nemesis Curt Schilling has decided to hang up is spikes after 20 years in the bigs.
With a lifetime record of 216-146, he is on the cusp of the Hall of Fame.

I heard the discussion on Mike and Mike this morning and it was considered too close to call.

While the regular season record is good, but not great, his post season is a spectacular 11-2 with a tiny 2.23 ERA and 120 strikeouts in 133 innings.

His 6 All Star selections and runner up in the Cy Young twice certainly show he was one of the best of his time, but is he one of the best of all time? I can think of at least 4 of his contemporaries right off the top of my head who I would rather have pitch a big game including Maddox, Clemens (the cheater,) Pedro Martinez, and Randy Johnson. Each of them will go in except maybe Clemens (the cheater.) Toss Glavine and Smoltz, couple it with Scilling's acerbic attitude, and he may be on the outside looking in.

The Yankee starting staff has begun to come around as Pettitte, Joba, and Burnett have done really well, all virtually lights out performances. Wang has been spotty, but he usually does struggle a bit early in the season. CC will be starting tonight. While he has not been at the top of his game, it's meaningless at this point to worry about that.

Alex Rodriguez to get hip surgery

It is reported that A-Rod will get the hip surgery and be out 6-8 weeks. This is a 2 stage operation, and he will need part 2 after the season ends.I am glad he is getting this done rather than drag it out all season.

We can expect to see him back sometime in May.

In other news, CC Sabathia did well in his outing, as did Wang.

We saw the game Wang started, and he threw 3 innings and other than a solo HR, he did well. He made a nice play fielding a bunt, and threw strikes. The staff is rounding into shape. The team has plenty of offense to make up for A-Rod's absence, and will only get better when he comes back.

A-Rod faces surgery

The Yankees are hoping A-Rod's injured hip can make it through the entire season. Cashman says it will need surgery and about 4 months to recover, so they are hoping to get to it in following the season.

My cable company actually added a channel that I can watch and like, Major League Baseball Network.

What they do is provide coverage from other networks, so yesterday, I saw a game from NESN, and I passed up a White Sox game, and a Mets game. Spring training games generally hold little interest beyond about the 3rd inning, because who cares about the guys that will probably never make it to the majors, unless it is my team. But the programming looks to be solid, with shows about some of the great World Series games in history, Today will feature the '61 with Mantle and Maris and the '63 with Ford against Koufax. The '59 Gogo Sox will also be on as they take on the '59 Dodgers.
This channel will probably be a favorite all season long. I do like that they will show games from other networks, so we should get a chance to see and hear some of the legendary hometown announcing teams.

First Game of Spring

Due to the WBC, the games are starting earlier in the year than usual. A-Rod homered in his first at bat and journeyman pitcher Brett Tomko started for the pinstripers. Tomko is a non roster free agent invitee, hoping to catch on as a spot starter or long reliever. He tossed 2 strong innings.

The only other pitchers of note to throw were Veras and Igawa. Veras was in trouble most of the time, though he did get the win (as if that mattered.) Igawa had a decent, if unremarkable inning.

The next game is Thursday as Phil Highes takes the mound agianst the AL Champion Rays. I still have trouble typing that.

About the only non A-Rod news of note out of spring training in Florida is that Wang faced some big league hitters and looked good. Bernie Williams was in camp, and batting against Wang, Bernie drilled a shot off him.
Bernie will be playing in the WBC for Puerto Rico.

Spring Training camp opens

New acquisition CC Sabathia has thrown to Jorge Posada, and the early reports are that all is good.
Wang looks to be fully healed from his injury, and Joba is looking good. Pettitte will slip into the 4th or 5th spot in the rotation.

But Wang, to me, willbe one of the key's to the season. If he can return to his position as one of the premiere starters in the AL (back to back 19 win seasons, and last year was 8-2 before his June injury) the team is going to win easily.

With a little bit of luck, the Yankees could have 2 or more 20 game winners on the staff. I doubt they would be able to match the Orioles of the 70's with 3 every year it seemed, along with the 1971 squad with 4.

I'm feeling it. I just sent in my Yankee Fan Club Membershiop dues.
The team is loaded and ready to make up for last season's terrible finish.

Brett Favre Retires

Yes, it's that time of year again, the annual Brett Favre retirement. But this time, he means it.

What is so different this time around? To begin with, his last year as quarterback of the Jets was a disappointment, to say the least. He did suffer an injury to his throwing arm, and is avoiding surgery. He is 39, which even lessens the chance of full recovery.

The Jets are now seeking a new QB, and the pool is rather sparse. But here is what will happen.

Come May, Brett will be back to help out the Jets as a back up QB. Just a transitional guy until the new young gun, whoever he may be, steps in. Would I put money on this scenario? No, but don't be surprised if it happens.

Manny Ramirez turns down 25 million

Manny Ramirez turned down the Dodgers offer for 1 year at 25 million. I don't get that, as he doesn't have teams beating down his door, and time is short.
This is starting to remind me of Rod Carew at the end of his Hall of Fame career, or even better, Bonds last year. Carew was a good guy, and his last year he was productive, batting .280 with an OBP of .371. Just no one wanted him for the price he asked, so he retired.
Bonds, well, no one wanted the circus that came to town with him.

Andy Pettitte also found out that MLB clubs are just not falling all over themselves to throw money at players who are flawed. He turned down the Yankees initial offer of 10 million, and held out for...

5 million.

The top players get the big money, still, but the second and third tier guys are coming up far short of what they got a few years ago.

What a Game!!! Steelers Win

Super Bowl LXIII is in the books, and it was an unbelievable game. It seems all the action took place in the last few minutes as the Cardinals came back from a 20-7 deficit to take a 23-20 lead with 3 minutes to go. Big Ben Roethlesberger drove down the field and passed his way to a last minute win for the Steelers 27-23.

The game had everything, including a safety.

Larry Fitzgerald caught 2 TD passes. Every Super Bowl should be this exciting.

The chips and salsa are bought, the DiGiorno pizza is in the freezer, and the veggie tray is ordered. I'm ready for the Super Bowl.

Sadly, the stupid Giants aren't in, but at least it looks to be a good game with the Cardinals against the Steelers.

I heard it described this morning, "if were a betting man, I'd put my money on Arizona, but I'm not, so I'm backing the Steelers."

I've always liked the Steelers. When I was a kid, and my Giants were getting their butts kicked every week, I needed to root for another team, too. I picked the best team they would never play, the Steelers of the 1970's. I've appreciated the team's work effort then, and ever since.

So, this Sunday, I'm rooting for the Steelers, but would be happy if the Cardinals win, as they have never done it before. The last championship was in 1947, pre-datingthe Super Bowl by many years.

So, Adam Jones got cut by the Cowboys and another talented guy throws it all away. One of his quotes after being cut, according to ESPN, was "I love me some me."
Apparently, this expression was made popular by Terrill Owens (also a member of the 'Boys.)

I understand it is ok to be comfortable with oneself, and even to love oneself, but does this say something about a man who, due to his own selfish and stupid actions, has let down his team mates, his family, and anyone who ever believed in him? It certainly does scream of an ego that is hyperinflated. The ego of a putz. The ego of a guy on a team NOT in the playoffs.

Meanwhile back to important stuff.

The Giants are playing the Eagles on Sunday in what will be a "Battle Royale." This may be the best game of the entire season, better than the Super Bowl may be. As a G Men fan, naturally, they are the pick.

But looking at it critically, the Giants do seem to be the team to beat. They have Earth, Wind, and Fire at full strength. The Iggles have a couple of nagging injuries. The week off has been of tremendous benefit to my team.

The Giants should win this one 27-17, easily covering the spread (currently 4 pts)

Quiet week

Not much happening in Yankee stuff for the last few weeks, and with the Giants having a bye week, it has been slow here at Yankee Fan Central.

I'm not a huge college football fan, with little more than a passing interest in the major bowl games. Didn't watch the playoffs, and the only game I really care about is the Eagles against the Vikings. I believe the Eagles are the only team that can keep the Giants out of the Super Bowl. The Giants can take the Cardinals, the Panthers, and the Vikings. Sure, they can beat the Eagles, but who wants to face a red hot team like them? And, if they take out the Vikes, the Eagles would have to be considered among the elite. They worry me.

The Sports Event of the Year

What was the biggest event of 2008?

There were 3 huge sports stories: The Phillies WS win, the Giants Super Bowl win, or the Patriots undefeated regular season.

I would eliminate the Patriots for 2 reasons: 1. I hate Boston and 2. They lost the biggest game of the season.

So, it's between the Giants winning the Super Bowl or the Phillies winning the World Series. To me, of course, the Super Bowl winning effort by the Giants is my favorite as I'm a huge fan. But realistically, the World Series win by the Phils is probably a bigger, and more improbable, event. The Phils had to come from behind to catch the Mets, beat a tough Brewers team led by CC Sabathia, and then beat a red hot L.A. team, before finally knocking off the upstart Rays.

I'd have to give it to them as the team of the year.

Giants lose last regular season game

Why bother to play the game at all? Giants rested most regulars for at least half the game. And they almost pulled it out. In a way, I was happy, knowing the game meant nothing to the G men and everything to the Vikings so I was glad I got to see the Vikes at their best. If the Giants meet them in the playoffs, I have total confidence that the Giants will crush them.

And speaking of crushing, the Eagles beat the crap out of the Cowboys, and by doing so, knowcked the 'boys out of the playoffs. I liked to see that. But I am worried as the Eagles will be tough in the playoffs, tougher than the 'boys.

The Giants have the bye week, so I can sit and watch to see who they play next. I am pretty confident as they went 12-4, and realistically, should have won 14 games.

Could they win back to back Super Bowls? It's looking good.

Teixiera Sign with Yanks

Just as I predicted on December 19th, Mark Teixiera signed with the New York Yankees.

Not one of the "experts" predicted it, and the Yankees denied it all the way. And, while the Yankees are spending like mad, it should be pointed out that every acquisition made sense. In the past, they sometimes grabbed players just to keep them away from another team, or to bolster a strength, but not so this year. They are rebuilding (this hurts) a 3rd place team that needed a major overhaul. They finished 8 games behind, and 3 out of the wild card. The 2008 Yankees were a good team, but they play in the AL East, a division that is loaded with 2 other very good teams, and a couple other decent teams. No punching bags like Seattle or Oakland here.

The Yankee pitching was nearly non-existent, so they added a great pitcher in CC Sabathia, and a good pitcher in AJ Burnett. With Wang returning from injury, they have a "Big 3" as good as any other team. Good enough to make up 8 games? Maybe. But the Rays will be better this year, and so will the Sox.

They were pretty well set at every position, except first base. Looks like that hole has been filled.

The Manny Ramirez rumor is still circulating, and I am pretty sure the Yankees will pass. A couple years ago, when Manny was on top of his game, the Yankees could have had Manny when the Sox put him on waivers, and they didn't claim him. All they had to do was pay him 20 mil per. Why would they sign him now, a few years, and a couple incidents later, for 25 mil or so? It makes no sense. I predict they are going to pass.

And, I've been right so far this off season.

In an absolute battle against Carolina with home field advantage through the playoffs on the line, the Giants won 34-28 in an overtime battle against the Panthers. The Giants came from behind in the 4th quarter at the Meadowlands, and a wind blown Carolina 50 yard field goal miss sent the game into OT.

Jacobs carried 24 times for 87 yards and 3 TDs. Manning turned in a workmanlike 17-27 for 181 yds and a TD. He also threw for a 2 pt conversion.

The backfield known as Earth, Wind, and Fire was back at full strength, and they pounded the ball as Ward ran for 215 yards and the G-Men totalled 301 on the ground, the most since 1959.

Hixon managed to hold on to 4 passes, and Boss, who is underutilized, caught 5 including one in the end zone for a TD.

Plaxico Burress is still an idiot.

Dock Ellis Passes away at 63

Former Pirate and Yankees star Pitcher Dock Ellis passed away at age 63. Ellis had battled drugs during his career. He was a very good pitcher with the Bucs, his best year 1970 when he went 19-9 with a 3.05 ERA.

In his only full season with the Bombers, Ellis won 17 while dropping 8 with a respectable 3.19 ERA.
For his career, Ellis went 138-119 with an ERA under 3.50. Certainly not HOF stats, but he was very good. Makes me wonder how he would have done if he dedicated himself to the game.

Mark Teixeira --where is he going?

Mark Teixeira is not going to the Red Sox according to the rumor mill. The Sox claim they have cut off negotiations. This has me wondering what is going on. Supposedly the Nationals and the Orioles are the front runners, and a "mystery team."
The usual suspects, the Yankees and Angels, have pretty much denied being in the hunt. With Scott Boras as agent, we all know he will go where the money is top, and I just don't see the Nationals or O's being able to pay the big bucks.

Meanwhile, it appears the Yankees are considering adding Manny Ramirez's bat to their potent lineup. Manny is the only player on the Red Sox I didn't hate in all my years of hating Red Sox players. (It officially started in 1961)
Yes, I would like to see that bat in the number 3, 5, or 6 hole, but the man comes with a lot of baggage. I hope Cashman pases on him.
So, where goes Teixeira? The Sox have Youkilis (the pussy) so I can't see them signing another first baseman. The Nationals? I guess they may want to build around him, but he may not want to play for a team that is destined to go nowhere for a few years. That leaves the O's, Angels and the very quiet Yanks.
He could improve the O's, but would they be able to win a division like the AL East? That division is loaded with quality teams. Are they really going to pay such huge money to bring in a player to possibly finish 2nd, but more likely 3rd or 4th? Doesn't make sense to me.
That leaves the Yanks or Angels as the best fit. Neither team "needs" him, but he Yankees propensity for grabbing every player may mean they may just suddenly be in the race. That plus the fact they do now have a regular first baseman, and it makes sense. I won't be surprised to see him in pinstripes.
Lastly, Pettitte is still negotiating. Apparently, he does not want to take the 10 million the Yankees have put on the table. Last year, he made 16 million, and that is too large a drop.
Not for nothing, but Andy, who is one of my all time favorite Yankees, should just take the cash. He is at the end, and did nothing in the second half last year. He did get injured and we don't expect much more thn his 14-14 record and 4.50 ERA. That isn't a 16 million dollar pitcher. I doubt anyone would pay him more than the Yankee offer. Just suck it up, Andy, and try to get by on the 10 mil.

Yankees rotation falling in place, Hot Stove Report

With the signings of CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett, the Yankee rotation is looking pretty strong. They also lead the league in starting pitchers with initials instead of names.
As of now, the big 3 starters are CC, AJ, and Wang. Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, and Ian Kennedy round it out.
Obviously, they won't have a 6 man rotation, so Kennedy, Chamberlain, and Hughes will be up for the last 2 spots. And, according to the rumor mill, Andy Pettitte is still in the running for the #5 spot. While one can never have too much pitching, as proven by last year's injury plagued season, it is almost certain the Yankees will not go north with 7 starters. I'd look for one of 3 things to happen: a trade of Kennedy or Hughes (I'd hate to see Hughes go) or letting Pettitte finish his career eleswhere, or keeping Joba in the pen, setting up Mo until he hangs up his spikes. Mo is 39, so how much longer can he pitch?

In football news, the stupid Giants were outplayed by the 'Boys. That is painful. In their defense, the Giants have 3 starters on offense out, not counting that loser Burress. And Hixon would make a great defensive back, as he can't catch and hold on to the ball. Two weeks in a row he dropped a potential TD pass that hit him in the hands.
This week, we play Carolina. I'm looking for a big Giants win if everyone is healthy.

CC Sabathia Signs with Yankees

CC Sabathia reportedly is signing the largest pitching contract in MLB history.

I am pleased to report that Santa Claus isn't the only fat guy coming to NY this December. The contract is for 140 million dollars over 6 years. I had put this forward a few days ago, and the Yankees listened to me and signed him. Finally.

The first piece of the '09 team has fallen into place. We still need at least one more starter to go along with Wang and Hughes.

The other big free agent signing was the Mets and K-Rod. The team has fallen apart the last 2 Septembers, and now it appears they may have the closer they needed.
The Indians signed Kerry Wood, the often injured Cub reliever, which may or may not have been a good deal due to his history.

Andy Pettitte has talked to Dodgers manager Joe Torre, but early reports are that Andy wants to pitch in the new Yankee Stadium. It appears to be all about the benjamins at this point in time.
CC Sabathia, the Big Kahuna in the frree agent draft, is still kicking around various offers. Rumor has it that the Yankees, Brewers, and believe it or not, the SF Giants, are the main players.

The Giants? Holy cow. They have so many holes to fill, I can't imagine them coming up with the big bucks it will take to land CC. It is believed that the Sox aren't in the running because they generally stay out of the big money market.

Giants win; Plaxico Burress a moron

The defending champion Giants looked great against Washington, and improved to 11-1. They used a balanced attack as Manning threw for 300+ yards and a TD as the 'Skins focused on stopping Brandon Jacobs. Eli simply used Boss as an out to slow down the charge, and hit his wideouts regularly. This team just has so many weapons, that even when a selfish moron like Burress is out, they kick butt.

Without going into anthing about the legal ramifications of Plax's actions, as he is innocent until proven guilt, one thing needs to be said concerning him and all professional athletes. We have high expectations for our athletes, some may say they are even too high.

But, what exactly, do we expect?

We expect them to show up and do their best all season long. We expect them to follow a certain code of conduct. Nothing out of the ordinary--pretty much the same rules every other law abiding citizen follows. Ok, maybe a bit more stringent, as it would probably be a good idea for athletes to NOT hang out in nightclubs as they are likely to have problems that come with being well known.

What do they get for this? They are financially rewarded with princely sums of money. And, they are treated like royalty everywhere they go. They are asked to pay a very small price for a huge reward, and dunderheads like Burress and Pacman Jones simply can't get it.

The NFL, all sports, in fact, step up and discipline players from time to time. But players continue to push the envelope. I wish I knew why. It is illogical. It's not like careers, especially in football, last a long time.

Giants and Jets win; Super Bowl in future?

The Giants now are tied for the best record in football following their hard fought victory over the Cardinals 37-29. The game was close, and the Giants needed to rely on Manning's arm more than they have recently as he completed 26 of 33 for 240 yds and 3 TDs. The usually powerful rushing game was hampered somewhat by the absence of Brandon Jacobs, coupled with a swarming Cardinals defense.

Meanwhile, the Jets absolutely put the smack down on the previously unbeaten Titans, 34-13. The Titans held everyone to an average under 13 PPG, but Brett Favre and the Jets must have missed that memo as they rolled up over 400 yds and controlled the ball for over 40 minutes.

Mussina retires; Hall of Fame awaits?

Today, Mike Mussina made it official as he announced his retirement following an 18 year big league career. He spent the last 8 with the Yankees following 10 with the Orioles.
Over that time, he managed to win 270 games. Moose was the model of consistency, as he strung together 17 years of 11 wins or more. In fact, only in his abbreviated first season, where he appeared in only 12 games, did he manage to not hit double digits.
He only won 20 games once, but 11 times he did register 15 or more wins. He even won 19 twice and 18 3 times.
300 has long been considered the magic number for a near automatic pass to Cooperstown, but with the introduction of the 5 man rotation, that number may be tougher to reach. Mussina's most starts in a year was 36. Back in the day of the 4 man rotation, he would have easily had another 4 starts per year. So, with the 70 or so extra starts he would have had over his career, it is reasonable that he could easily have won 300 games, or at least been close enough to consider one more year.
I never thought of Moose as the top pitcher in the league, but he was also one of the best. Is that enough, for the Hall?
I believe it is.

Now, this does affect the Yankees. Mussina was their top pitcher last year, and now they have to replace him immediately. It would be nice to do it from within, but could anyone expect a rookie to step up and put up those kind of numbers?
Joba or Hughes may one day do it, but could they be counted on after coming off injuries? It looks like the Yankees need to sign a free agent pitcher just went up substantially.

Giants win again 30-10

As a long time Giants fan, I have no real complaints. Big Blue has been to the Super Bowl 4 times, and come home with the trophy 3 of those times, most recently last year. But usually, they were the Rodney Dangerfield team, they got no respect. Sure, the '86 squad was one tough bunch, and were known as the Big Blue Wrecking Crew. The '90 team was almost an afterthought, and considered lucky as Phil Simms missed much of the season and Jeff Hostetler led them to the Super Bowl.
The 2000 edition of the Giants fought their way into the Super Bowl, losing to the heavily favored Ravens. And last year's edition had to be the quietest Super Bowl team ever. They were off the radar, and were underdogs in every single playoff game, beating Brett Favre and the Packers, the sexy favorite Cowboys, and finally, in the Super Bowl, taking down the 18-0 and considered unbeatable, Patriots.
So, coming in to this year, most "experts" predicted the G-men would finish behind the Cowboys, Skins, and possibly the Eagles.
Imagine how happy I am to hear those same "experts" pronounce that the Giants are possibly the best team in football. And, of course, they are living up to the hype. Yesterday was the latest example. The Ravens came into the Meadowlands, and the pre-game made it sound as if it was going to be a fierce battle. The Ravens could not be run against, and had only allowed 1 rushing touchdown all year. In fact, teams averaged 60 yards or so on the ground against them.
I guess they forgot to tell the Giants how awesome the Ravens were, as Brandon Jacobs scored 2 rushing touchdowns in the first quarter, and both he and Jacobs each ran for more than 60 yards. Manning turned in a workman like performance, but the heroes were the defense. Joe Flacco, who had gone 4 games without an interception, was welcomed to the NFL with 2 by Aaron Ross, who returned one 50 yards for a TD to put the game out of reach.

In a strange story in the NFL, the Steelers beat the Chargers 11-10. You may think that seems unusual a score, and you would be right. First time in NFL history such a score was recorded in a game, according to the talking heads. To make it even more unusual, the final play of the game was a razzle dazzle type desperate play by the Chargers, which resulted in Polamolu somehow coming up with the ball, and sprinting in for a TD, making the score a more normal 17-10. However, there was a penalty on the play...no wait, it was an illegal play, penalty declined, and... no wait...a game can't end on a penalty. So, half the team was off the field, half was on the sidelines waiting for it to be sorted out, and eventually, the score was reversed to 11-10, and the game was declared over. I'm sure someone on ESPN will be able to explain, because I still have no idea. It was a crazy ending to a well played defensive battle in snowy weather.
The Skins had a chance to deliver a knock out blow to the Cowvoys season, but didn't. The 'Boys won 14-10.

In baseball news:
Mussina is still trying to decide if he will retire. He will announce it this week. I wonder if he is thinking about 300 wins? He is at 270, which means he is 2 years away, at best. While I personally hate when stars hang on just to hit milestones, Moose is coming off one of his best years ever, and his first 20 win season.
In more hot stove news, according to Yankees.com The Yankees made a record-breaking six-year, $140 million offer to free-agent starter CC Sabathia on Friday as the first part of their plan to overhaul their starting rotation, Hank Steinbrenner, one of the team's co-chairmen, confirmed.
The Yankees also confirmed that they will pursue Burnett and Lowe, and are looking to deal for Peavy with the Padres. If all of this takes place, they will have one of the greatest teams ever assembled. I wouldn't count on them getting everyone, but CC and one other pitcher would make them heavy favorites to win it all.

Yankees start to rebuild

The Yankees acquired slugging switch hitting first sacker Nick Swisher in exchange for Wilson Betemit and a couple minor league pitchers.

Swisher turns 28 in a few days, so he should just be coming into his prime. While the Yankees have always been known for great centerfielders, first base in Yankee Stadium has been home to such great stars as Gehrig, Mattingly, and Giambi.

Swisher has shown good power, belting over 20 homers, and driving in 80 runs. He also walks 90 times or so. While his average hovers around .240, his OBP is .350 or better. So, he appears to have a decent eye, which makes his 130+ strikeouts interesting. I'm predicting that by working with Yankee coaches, along with the protection of the potent Yankee lineup, he could become more selective. It would not surprise me in the least to see him bump the average up while adding to his HR numbers.
I'm predicting right now that he will put up these numbers:
.280 avg, 30 HR, 95 RBI while dropping his strikeouts total to under 100. Better numbers than these wouldn't surprise me at all.
It is expected that Cashman will pursue some of the free agents who become available today. Early indications are that he will try to sign CC, and Lowe. No word yet on whther Moose or Pettitte will return. But the trade for Swisher pretty much ends the idea of a Texiera signing.

And, in football news--J*E*T*S Jets Jets Jets
The New York Jets, who play in Giants Stadium, in NEW JERSEY, won in OT against the Patriots to take over first place. It was a pretty decent game, as the Jets looked to run away with it in the first half, and held on in the second, eventually winning on a field goal in OT. It was significant for the Jets because it gives them a few advantages in tie breaker situations against the Pats. The Jets schedule looks pretty favorable the rest of the way, and last year's 4-12 team could wind up 12-4, although 11 wins is more probable.
And the other tem that plays in the NJ Meadowlands, the Giants have a big test this weekend as they take on the Ravens. The G-men are favored by 7. If I were a betting man, and if forced to place a bet, I'd put my money on the Ravens and the points. But straight up, I'm looking for the Giants to improve to 10-1.

Jets and Giants win

The Giants won a battle against the Eagles Sunday night, while the Jets pounded St. Louis. The game was over by half time.

The free agent baseball market will be in full swing soon. Manny Ramirez is one of the stars seeking employment. It's kind of interesting that due to his attitude and the amount of money he is seeking, his options are severly limited.

I really am looking forward to the Yankees movement in the market. They need to retool, and are probably going to seek out some pitching.

Early reports are that Andy Pettitte will be back. I'm not sure about Mussina, but these are both back of the rotation pitchers now. Moose is coming off what was his best year as a Yankee, but this will be his 19th MLB season, and that is a lot of pitches. Andy, too, was always one pitch away from a career ending injury it seemed.
Not sure what is going to happen with Joba and whether Phil Hughes will return from his injury riddled season. Mo had another great year, but he is not getting any younger. Lot of question marks on a staff that had question marks last year.
CC Sabathia and Dempster are 2 big names that may be available. Giambi will be released, and that means Mark Texiera may be pursued. Posada will be back, but who knows what they will get with him. The 2009 team may take a few weeks to introduce themselves to each other.

Congratulations Phillies

It was a long season, and the Phillies came out on top. It was the first Series for the franchise since 1980, and only the second in their long history.

It was a well played Series, and while I had no team in this, I enjoyed thoroughly every game. It was well played ball.

The Hot Stove League kicks off today. Should be plenty of big names kicked about in the free agent pool, but the gem may be CC Sabathia.

No one significant is leaving the Rays, so they may be a force to be reckoned with for the next few years. Couple that with the good young pitchers they have to trade, and they may even get stronger next year. The Yankees and Sox need to reload.
